Material Comparison
Fibre Cement vs HPL Compact Panels: Which Is Right for Your Project?
A side-by-side technical comparison of fibre cement board (FCB) and HPL compact exterior panels — covering performance, fire rating, aesthetics, cost, and best applications for Vietnam's architecture market.

Fibre Cement vs HPL Compact Panels: Which Is Right for Your Project?
Two materials dominate premium facade cladding specifications in Vietnam's architecture market: fibre cement board (FCB) and HPL compact exterior panels. Both are excellent performers in tropical climates, but they serve different project types, budgets, and design intents. This guide cuts through the marketing language to give architects and developers an honest technical comparison.

1. Composition & Manufacturing
Fibre Cement Board
FCB is made from a mixture of Portland cement, sand, cellulose fibres, and water, compressed under high pressure and autoclaved for strength. The cement matrix gives it natural resistance to moisture, fire, mold, and insects — a major advantage in Vietnam's tropical climate.
Premium FCB (e.g., Swisspearl Carat, Largo) is further enhanced with coloured cement pigmentation throughout the panel body, so scratches and chips don't expose a raw grey core.
HPL Compact Exterior
HPL compact panels are manufactured by stacking multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin, topped with a decorative layer under very high heat and pressure (HLP = High Pressure Laminate). The entire panel is solid resin — there is no substrate, unlike standard interior HPL which is bonded to MDF or plywood.
The surface is protected by an UV-stable overlay that maintains colour integrity for 10–15+ years without repainting.
2. Fire Performance
Fire safety is a critical differentiator in Vietnam, particularly for buildings over 28m covered by QCVN 06:2022.
| Fire Rating | FCB | HPL Compact |
|---|---|---|
| Best achievable | A1 (non-combustible) — cement is inherently non-organic | B-s2,d0 — resin core is organic |
| Typical grade | A2-s1,d0 | B-s2,d0 |
| For buildings >28m | ✅ Fully compliant (premium grade) | ⚠️ Requires engineering review |
| Hospitals, schools | ✅ Preferred | Check local authority |
Key insight: If your project requires A2 or A1 fire classification (hospitals, high-rises, schools), fibre cement is the natural choice. HPL compact can be specified for mid-rise commercial and residential with appropriate wind-load subframe design.
3. Aesthetic & Design Flexibility
This is where HPL compact panels clearly lead:
- Color accuracy: HPL surfaces maintain colour within tight tolerances across production batches — critical for large facades where panels come from multiple deliveries
- Wood effects: HPL can mimic timber grain with UV stability that natural wood cannot match
- Surface texture range: Matte, satin, gloss, textile, concrete, stone — all from one manufacturer
- Edge finishing: HPL compact can be routed and shaped at the workshop to create blade fins, reveals, and grooved panels
FCB is more limited — standard FCB is a neutral grey or cream that requires painting. Premium coloured-body FCB (Swisspearl) comes in curated palettes of 30–60 colours but cannot match HPL's breadth.
4. Installation & Maintenance
Cutting & Fabrication
- FCB: Requires diamond-blade cutting, generates silica dust — full respiratory PPE required. Difficult to shape on-site.
- HPL Compact: Standard carbide blade cutting. Easier to fabricate, route, and shape at workshop.
On-site Handling
- FCB: Heavier panels require more labour on subframe. More fragile at edges — chip easily if dropped.
- HPL Compact: Lighter, more resilient at corners.
Long-term Maintenance
- FCB (painted): Repainting every 7–10 years in tropical climates. Factory PVDF coating extends this to 15+ years.
- HPL Compact: No repainting — ever. Surface is permanent. Clean with mild detergent.
5. Cost Analysis (Vietnam Market, 2026)
| Cost Component | FCB (mid-grade) | FCB (Swisspearl) | HPL Compact (FunderMax) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material supply | $15–22/m² | $30–50/m² | $45–90/m² |
| Aluminium subframe | $18–25/m² | $18–25/m² | $18–25/m² |
| Installation labour | $8–12/m² | $8–12/m² | $8–12/m² |
| Total installed | $41–59/m² | $56–87/m² | $71–127/m² |
| Repainting (10yr) | $8–15/m² | None | None |
| 20-year TCO | $49–74/m² | $56–87/m² | $71–127/m² |
TCO note: Over a 20-year building lifecycle, premium FCB and mid-range HPL compact have surprisingly similar total cost of ownership once repainting is factored in.
6. Recommendations by Project Type
| Project Type | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| High-rise residential (>28m) | Fibre Cement A2 | Fire compliance, cost-effective at scale |
| Boutique hotel / resort | HPL Compact | Superior aesthetics, wood effects, low maintenance |
| School / hospital | Fibre Cement A1 | Fire code, durability, local authority acceptance |
| Retail frontage | HPL Compact | Colour precision, brand consistency, scratchable surfaces |
| Coastal villa | Swisspearl FCB | Coloured-body cement, salt-spray resistant |
| Budget commercial | Mid-grade FCB | Cost performance, wide availability in Vietnam |
