Vietnam's tropical climate presents unique challenges for facade materials. High humidity, intense UV radiation, monsoon rain, typhoon-force winds, and coastal salt spray demand careful material selection.
Key Climate Factors
1. Humidity & Moisture
Vietnam averages 75–85% relative humidity year-round. Materials that absorb moisture — untreated timber, porous natural stone, uncoated metals — will degrade rapidly.
Recommended materials:
- Fibre cement panels (Swisspearl, Equitone) — zero moisture absorption
- HPL compact panels (FunderMax, Trespa) — sealed resin core
- Architectural metal mesh (GKD) — naturally ventilated, no moisture trap
2. UV Resistance
Tropical UV levels in Vietnam are 2–3× higher than Central Europe. Organic coatings fade faster. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) coatings retain color 3× longer than polyester.
Specification tip: Always request UV test reports to EN ISO 4892 or ASTM G154. Minimum 5,000 hours accelerated weathering recommended.
3. Typhoon Wind Load
Central Vietnam (Da Nang to Nha Trang) experiences typhoons with wind speeds exceeding 150 km/h. Facade fixings must be engineered for negative wind pressure.
Specification tip: Request wind load calculation per EN 1991-1-4 or local TCVN standard. Always use concealed fixing systems for panels > 1200mm.
4. Salt Spray (Coastal Projects)
Projects within 500m of coastline need materials rated for marine environments. Standard galvanized steel subframes corrode within 3–5 years.
Recommended: Stainless steel 316L subframes, marine-grade aluminium, or hot-dip galvanized with additional PVDF coating.
